Independent Election Commission Secretary-General for the Parties Registry Ahmad Abu Zaid said Wednesday hundreds of individual party resignations have been submitted to the registry.

Abu Zaid told Al Mamlaka the commission receives resignations just as it receives membership applications, stressing that “the core principle” is freedom to join or leave a party.

He noted that while the resignations reached the hundreds, they were individual, not collective, and members are not required to disclose reasons for quitting.

Abu Zaid added that a large number of resignations from one party could disrupt the membership ratio required by the Political Parties Law, which may lead the commission to suspend the party’s financial subsidy until it rectifies its status
