An injury caused one of the assistant referees to call on a fan to officiate a match in the German third-division soccer league today, Saturday.
An assistant referee suffered an ankle injury in the 21st minute of the match between Wiesbaden and its guest Meppen, and he went out on a stretcher, and there was no fourth referee on the field.
After consultations, the stadium's indoor announcer announced whether any of the fans held a valid refereeing licence.
One of the fans advanced, and after confirming his license, the match was completed, which ended with Meppen winning 2-1, thanks to a goal six minutes before the end.
Wiesbaden fell to the third place that qualifies for the promotion playoff, as it is one point behind the second place in the standings.
Meppen maintained his slim hopes of survival, as he jumped to the penultimate position, five points behind the safety zone.
