Amman- Members of the Palestinian police from Gaza are receiving training in Egypt to participate in a force expected to undertake security tasks in the sector after the war ends, a Palestinian official revealed.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati announced last August, during a visit to the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing leading to the sector alongside his Palestinian counterpart Mohamed Mustafa, that Egypt is working on a plan to train five thousand Palestinian security officers and personnel in Cairo, in preparation for their deployment in Gaza after the war.

The Palestinian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that over 500 police personnel and officers received operational and theoretical training in Cairo last March, and that hundreds more have been undergoing similar training since the end of September.

A 26-year-old Palestinian officer who participated in the course, also refusing to be named, said, "I am very happy with this training," adding, "We want to stop the war and aggression permanently, and we are eager to serve the homeland and the citizen."

He expressed hope for the formation of a security force that is "independent, not beholden to external alliances and objectives. We want it loyal only to Palestine."

The Palestinian official clarified that the newly trained personnel will form part of a 5,000-strong police force, all from Gaza but receiving salaries from the Palestinian Authority, which is based in Ramallah.

Based on an agreement brokered by Egypt at the end of 2024 between Hamas and Fatah, led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the 5,000 police affiliated with the Authority will be integrated with 5,000 of their counterparts from the Hamas-led police in Gaza.

The police force will operate under the supervision and responsibility of the "independent competencies" (technocratic) committee, which Hamas and Fatah agreed to form to manage the Gaza Strip, and will deploy in the sector after the war ends.

The plan by US President Donald Trump to cease the war in the Gaza Strip, endorsed by a recent UN Security Council resolution, stipulated that the Gaza Strip be "governed by a temporary transitional authority of a Palestinian technocratic and non-politicized committee," responsible for managing daily services for the population in Gaza, under the supervision of an international transitional body.

The Palestinian official says the Egyptian training plan is being carried out in coordination with the Palestinian Authority.
