Debate over Muslims congratulating Christians cannot be understood except as part of wider battle over public consciousness, run in name of religion but political and cultural at core. Issue no longer simple jurisprudential question, but tool to sort society and stir sectarianism.
Logical question deliberately ignored: how Islam permits Muslim marriage to woman of Scripture who keeps her faith and rituals, shares most intimate details of daily life, yet today objects to word of congratulation on religious occasion. If coexistence acceptable within one home, how does it become rejected in society. What religious logic makes marriage easier than greeting.
Contradiction reflects selective reading of texts and history. Just as Arab Islamic history reduced to moments of conflict while long record of coexistence ignored, religion reduced to specific opinions presented as only truth. More dangerous is discourse rejecting greeting followers of another faith does not stop there, but opens door to excluding anyone with different view, then different interpretation, then even those within same religion and sect. This no defence of doctrine, but domination of other and monopoly over truth in name of religion.
In Jordanian and Arab reality, where religious and social diversity daily fact, such discourse appears detached from society while tied to cross-border ideological struggles. Muslim Christian relations historically built not on seasonal fatwas, but on daily partnership in life, work, homeland. But this history does not serve hardline discourse, so marginalised, while narrow readings promoted as sole guardians of identity.
Irony is this discourse does not protect religion, but drains it of spirit. It ignores objectives, overlooks impact of fatwas on social cohesion, turns religion from unifying value system into instrument of control and fear. Identity then managed through prohibition not trust, division reproduced within one society year after year.
Problem not greeting, but mindset fearing word of congratulations more than tearing social fabric. Not text, but reading separating it from its objectives. Religion accepting coexistence in deepest human relationships cannot reject it in simplest forms, unless aim not protecting belief, but managing disagreement in its name. Core issue not congratulatory phrase, but authority exercised under banner of religion, starting by banning word, expanding to excluding different, ending with monopoly over truth. When truth monopolised, no society remains, only enforced obedience.
