Amman, 1 Jan 2026: Jordan fertiliser industry represents one of key industrial sectors, supporting agriculture and food security while contributing to national economy, board member of Jordan Chamber of Industry and founder and general manager of Al-Qawafel Industrial Agricultural Company Ahmad Al-Bass says.
Speaking during specialised lecture organised by Jordanian Association for Scientific Research, Entrepreneurship and Creativity on specialised fertiliser industry in Jordan, Al-Bass says fertilisers form essential element of modern agriculture, supplying plants with key nutrients including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulphur, in addition to micronutrients, improving productivity and crop quality.
He explains fertiliser industry divides into conventional and specialised fertilisers. Conventional fertilisers used in large-scale agriculture account for about 90% of global production, while specialised fertilisers used in modern and intensive farming systems, especially irrigated agriculture, account for around 10%.
Al-Bass notes Jordan fertiliser sector includes about 50 industrial facilities, providing more than 3,000 direct jobs. Total value of sector output estimated at around $1bn, with value added reaching about 69% of total production, reflecting depth of local manufacturing.
He adds specialised fertiliser industry helps raise efficiency of fertiliser and water use and improves agricultural input management, in line with move towards sustainable agriculture and modern production technologies.
Al-Bass outlines key challenges facing sector, including high production costs, rising raw material prices and limited size of local market, stressing need to develop products and boost competitiveness.
He underlines importance of supporting specialised chemical industries and providing enabling investment environment to enhance growth, increase value added and support related productive sectors.
Al-Bass concludes specialised fertiliser industry offers real opportunity to strengthen integration between industrial and agricultural sectors and support sustainable economic development in kingdom.
Lecture, moderated by association head Dr Reda Al-Khawaldeh, features questions and interventions highlighting importance of sector and need for support.
