Venezuela says it rejects US ‘military aggression’ after series of explosions rock capital Caracas and other areas early Saturday.
Government statement reports attacks also hit Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira states, prompting President Nicolas Maduro to declare national emergency and mobilise defence forces.
According to witnesses and images circulating on social media, explosions occur, aircraft fly overhead and thick black smoke rise across capital from around 2:00am (06:00 GMT).
Witnesses report power cuts in southern part of city, near major military base.
US President Donald Trump repeatedly threatens to carry out ground operations in Venezuela. He does not publicly disclose targets but pressures President Nicolas Maduro to leave country. Trump says last Monday it would be ‘smart’ for Maduro to step down.
Pentagon refers inquiries to White House, which declines to comment.
Venezuelan government says aim of attack is US seizure of country oil and minerals, adding Washington ‘will not succeed’ in taking these resources.
