Greater Amman Municipality Committee Chairman Dr Yousef Shawarbeh conducts inspection tour on Saturday of stormwater drainage infrastructure projects in several areas that witness rising rainwater levels during recent weather system, accompanied by City Manager Eng Ahmad Al-Malkawi and relevant directors.
Tour covers Al-Ikhlas Street in Wadi Al-Seer area, Al-Shweifat intersection on Airport Road, Zaid bin Khalid Street in Kherbet Al-Souk area in Al-Yadoudeh, and Al-Shawabkeh roundabout in Marj Al-Hamam area.
Shawarbeh reviews detailed briefing from engineering teams on overall condition of stormwater drainage system, including culverts, inlets, outlets, and discharge points, as well as strategic implementation plans to be carried out through future tenders and immediate temporary solutions already under way.
He also listens to explanation from relevant directors on technical and engineering solutions, both immediate and long-term, implemented by municipality teams to address rising water levels. Measures include cleaning and expanding drainage networks to accommodate larger water volumes, inspecting automated pumps, ensuring readiness of internal drainage systems, and studying side slopes to prevent flow of debris and stones that could block drainage inlets.
Shawarbeh stresses need to immediately rehabilitate all points where water levels rise during rainfall, provide permanent solutions, increase absorption capacity, ensure infrastructure operates efficiently and effectively, avoid repeated water pooling, and prevent traffic closures that threaten public safety.
He instructs all sectors to accelerate maintenance works on stormwater drainage networks, work intensively and continuously to complete technical solutions and address all observations recorded during previous weather systems, especially in tunnels and vital areas, and develop engineering solutions aligned with climate change impacts and short-duration heavy rainfall.
Shawarbeh underlines importance of mobilising all municipality capabilities to deliver best services to Amman and residents, and avoid any closures that could affect traffic flow or road user safety.
