Countries have begun announcing their positions on participation in the Peace Council initiative launched by US President Donald Trump, as Trump continues issuing invitations to join.
The following are countries that have announced rejection of participation:
Sweden
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told journalists in Davos on Wednesday that his country will not participate in the Peace Council initiative launched by US President Donald Trump in the form presented so far.
Norway
Norway has rejected an invitation from Donald Trump to join the Peace Council, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Wednesday, particularly after relations deteriorated noticeably following the US president’s expression of frustration at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
State Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office Kristofer Thoner said “the US proposal raises a number of questions that require deeper dialogue with the United States”.
Italy
Italian media reported on Wednesday that Rome will not participate in President Donald Trump’s Peace Council initiative, citing concerns that joining such a body led by a single head of state could violate the country’s constitution.
France
Earlier, sources close to President Emmanuel Macron said France at this stage “does not intend to respond” to the invitation to join the Peace Council proposed by US President Donald Trump, noting that it “raises fundamental questions”.
