As US and Iranian officials expect to hold talks, two US officials tell Axios United States informs Iran on Wednesday it will not agree to Tehran demands to change location and format of talks scheduled for Friday.
Axios quotes officials saying dispute could derail diplomatic track and push President Donald Trump toward military option.
According to Axios, United States and Iran agree to hold talks Friday in Istanbul, with participation of other Middle East countries as observers.
Iran says Tuesday it wants to move talks to Oman and hold them in bilateral format, to ensure focus on nuclear file only, without other issues such as missiles, which remain priority for United States and regional states.
Report adds US officials review request to change venue but decide Wednesday to reject it.
Axios quotes senior US official saying: ‘We told them it is either this format or nothing. They said: OK, then nothing.’
Official adds if Iran ready to return to original format, United States ready to meet this week or next, saying: ‘We want a real deal quickly, or people will look at other options,’ referring to Trump repeated threats of military action.
In related context, US officials say White House envoy Steve Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner, Trump son-in-law and adviser, expected to travel to Qatar on Thursday for talks on Iran with prime minister.
They add current plan is for both to return from Doha to Miami instead of travelling to meet Iranians.
