Alphabet, owner of Google, plans to issue bonds maturing in 100 years to support its massive investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to Bloomberg Tuesday.
The company aims to raise around $20 billion, largely through bonds due February 2126, with lenders seeking exposure to the AI boom. Alphabet did not comment.
Alphabet, alongside competitors Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, invests heavily in AI infrastructure. Market reaction has been mixed, with some investors concerned about excessive spending.
Century-long bonds are rare, particularly for Alphabet, which could fund AI projects from its large advertising revenue instead of borrowing. Intense AI competition has driven unprecedented spending on data centers, energy, and related infrastructure.
Last year, Alphabet spent $91 billion on computing infrastructure and projects $175–185 billion this year. To manage costs, the company issued 50-year bonds late last year. While century bonds are not new, US firms have rarely used them in recent decades, with companies like Disney, Coca-Cola, FedEx, Ford, and Motorola issuing them in the 1990s.
