Indian star Priyanka Chopra spoke candidly about the challenges she faced after moving to the United States to build her personal legacy. She also expressed gratitude toward her younger self during remarks at the India Conference at Harvard University.
Early Challenges in America
Speaking at the annual conference, which featured prominent figures from various fields, Chopra explained that she was determined to establish her own legacy during her early years in the U.S., particularly as her transition to Hollywood coincided with a turbulent phase in her Bollywood career.
She emphasized that her professional journey in America was far from easy. She encountered numerous difficulties that she had not experienced in India.
Among the challenges she described were waking up early to film very small roles, participating in major advertising campaigns alongside multiple actors, and waiting up to 15 hours on set without filming a single scene that day.
Chopra stressed that she continued working tirelessly toward a long-term goal, stating that she was striving to build a meaningful legacy.
Gratitude to Her Younger Self
Chopra expressed deep appreciation for her younger self, describing her as brave and strong. She said that thanks to her determination, she was able to overcome emotional moments—wiping away tears, reapplying mascara, and returning to interviews composed within minutes. She added that she can now redefine what success means.
Reflecting on her current understanding of success as a prominent figure in both Indian and international cinema, Chopra said it now means being able to spend time with her family, pick up her daughter from school, and have the freedom to choose film projects that align with her priorities and relationships.
She credited her younger self for her achievements, saying that it was that determined young woman—who pushed forward and forgave herself many times for her decisions—who made her current success possible.
