“We and the War!”
As had been anticipated in recent days, the United States and Israel have launched a war against Iran. The reasons are both longstanding and recent, centered on toppling the Iranian regime and removing it from the equation of what is referred to as the “new Middle East.” This war could stop at a certain point depending on military developments and operations. However, what is happening so far represents an initial phase of a long-term reshaping process—one that affects all countries in the region, as well as the interests of major powers tied to oil, waterways, and spheres of influence.
We are not a party to this war, yet its fire reaches us whether we wish it or not. We fall within its scope. Our country was previously exposed to danger during what was called the “Twelve-Day War” last June, when missile shrapnel fell in various parts of the Kingdom. It is still too early to determine how far this war will go; it may be prolonged or brief, and it may bring the warring sides closer to agreements they failed to reach through negotiations that had reached a deadlock.
This war places before us a system of necessary precautions. We are confident that the state is sufficiently prepared to safeguard Jordan’s security, its people, and its vital interests. His Majesty Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein has recently affirmed on several occasions that Jordan’s security, stability, and the safety of its people are above all else. Jordan consistently believes in resolving regional and international crises through peaceful negotiation that ensures mutual and shared interests. Accordingly, we stand in the space of wisdom and reason to spare the peoples of the region the calamities of war and to reject the mentality of isolation, arrogance, turning away from human values, justice, and international law.
Our priorities must be clear. We are committed to our country’s independence and territorial integrity. We are united behind His Majesty to continue Jordan’s path and determine its choices in a way that safeguards its supreme interests, preserves its role and standing, and maintains its national, regional, and international relationships. Undoubtedly, our country is also concerned with collective national security, which has become directly threatened, as sisterly states are subjected to serious military strikes under the pretext of targeting American military and civilian interests.
Our national awareness stands at the forefront of our priorities. It forms the foundation of rational thinking amid the developments, events, and plans unfolding around us. Awareness here means not only understanding, but also the ability to shape positions, determine direction, demonstrate flexibility in dealing with possibilities, and confront threats regardless of their source or nature. Within this framework, political awareness—whether among elites or the general public—must be directed first, and perhaps last, toward Jordan’s interests, especially if emerging equations change in ways that could harm us, near or far.
This is not merely a battle that can be resolved within a defined timeframe. It is a long war with multiple dimensions—strategic, economic, and political. It may alter balances and produce a Middle East different from the one we have known for decades. In all circumstances, we must strengthen our national tools to ensure that our country remains a key player in this equation—a stable, active, and strong state in this turbulent region of the world.
