Approximately 100,000 people have fled to shelters in Lebanon as of Friday, according to a senior UN official. Displacement numbers are expected to rise rapidly following "unprecedented" Israeli warnings calling for residents to leave large areas of the country.
The Humanitarian Situation
Imran Riza, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon, described the situation over the past two days as "unprecedented," citing both the scale of the evacuation orders and the resulting state of panic.
Shelter Capacity: Currently, 100,000 people are housed in approximately 477 collective shelters.
Remaining Space: Only about 57 shelters still have available space, and capacity is being exhausted very quickly.
Historical Context: Riza noted that during the 2024 conflict, over 1 million people were displaced, with 75% to 80% of them staying outside of formal shelters. A similar trend is expected this time.
Evacuation Orders and Panic
On Thursday, the Israeli military issued notices for residents to evacuate the southern suburbs of Beirut, parts of the eastern Bekaa Valley, and wide areas of southern Lebanon. Riza stated that people are moving in all directions with little certainty of where to go, which is driving the surge in shelter seekers.
The Death Toll
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, continuous Israeli strikes over the past five days have resulted in:
217 Deaths
798 Injuries
These figures cover the period from dawn on Monday, March 2, to the evening of Friday, March 6.
Summary of the Current Escalation
The situation has moved into a high-intensity phase. Between the evacuation warnings issued by Israel for Beirut and the Bekaa, and the retaliatory warnings issued by Hezbollah for Northern Israel (from your previous text), the civilian displacement crisis is accelerating on both sides of the border.
