The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accused the United States and Israel of entering a "dangerous new phase" of the war against Iran, following the targeting of fuel storage facilities within the country.
In an official statement, the Ministry asserted that "the criminal war waged by the United States and Israel against the Iranian people has entered a dangerous new stage with the execution of deliberate strikes on Iran's energy infrastructure."
The Ministry added that attacks on fuel depots "amount to nothing less than deliberate chemical warfare against Iranian citizens," noting that targeting these facilities results in the release of hazardous and toxic substances into the air.
According to the statement, the strikes are "causing the poisoning of civilians, inflicting severe environmental damage, and endangering the lives of the population on a massive scale." It further warned that the repercussions of this environmental and humanitarian disaster "will not be limited to Iran's borders."
The Iranian Foreign Ministry characterized the targeting of fuel facilities as "constituting war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide all at once."
Israeli Military Confirmation
On Sunday, the Israeli occupation military announced that it had targeted Iranian infrastructure in various regions inside Iran.
In a brief statement, the military explained that the strikes are part of a series of operations targeting Iranian facilities and infrastructure, without disclosing further details regarding the nature of the targets or the extent of the damage resulting from the attacks so far.
Fuel Crisis in Tehran
Fuel distribution in Tehran has been "temporarily" halted, according to an announcement by an Iranian official on Sunday, following U.S. and Israeli raids that targeted oil storage sites in and around the capital.
The official Iranian news agency, IRNA, quoted the Governor of Tehran, Mohammad Sadegh Motamedian, stating: "Due to damage sustained by the fuel supply network, distribution has been temporarily suspended."
Context of the Escalation
The United States and Israel have been launching airstrikes against Iran since Saturday, February 28, which resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Since then, Tehran has responded by striking Israel and other countries in the region with missiles and drones.
Iran has also implemented a naval blockade on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and has targeted oil tankers attempting to transit the waterway.
On Sunday, March 1, Hezbollah launched several missiles from Lebanon targeting northern Israel in response to Khamenei's assassination. This has dragged Lebanon into an open war with Israel, with the latter conducting devastating raids on southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut (Dahiyeh).
