U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that "an entire civilization could die tonight and never return," referring to Iran. This follows his threats to target Iranian power plants and bridges on Tuesday if Tehran fails to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. While expressing that he does not desire this outcome, he remarked that such a scenario is "likely to happen."
In a post on the "Truth Social" platform, Trump added that what he described as a "radical and comprehensive regime change" could pave the way for a new phase led by "different, smarter, and less extremist minds," suggesting the possibility of a "positive revolutionary transformation."
He characterized this moment as "one of the most important in the long and complicated history of the world," asserting that "47 years of blackmail, corruption, and death will finally end."
The deadline set by President Trump is scheduled to expire at dawn. He previously intensified his rhetoric, posting: "Tuesday will be the day of power plants and the day of bridges, all in one day in Iran. You will never see anything like it!!!" He added, "Open the damn Strait you crazy bastards, or you will live in hell - just watch!"—referring to the vital shipping lane Iran has kept effectively closed since the U.S. and Israel began launching strikes over a month ago.
In response, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi warned that Trump's threats to strike infrastructure could amount to "war crimes."
Context of the Crisis:
Mediation: Pakistan has submitted a plan to end the war to both Iran and the U.S., which could potentially take effect today and lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Military Background: The U.S. and Israel have been conducting airstrikes against Iran since February 28, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Since then, Tehran has retaliated by striking Israel and other regional countries with missiles and drones.
