On Thursday, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani, asked the Swedish ambassador in Baghdad to leave Iraq.

He also directed the withdrawal of the Iraqi charge d'affaires from the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

The decision comes in response to the Swedish government's repeated permission to burn the Qur'an, insult Islamic sanctities, and burn the Iraqi flag.

On Thursday, the Iraqi government informed Sweden that it would sever diplomatic relations with it in the event of a repeat of the incident of burning the Holy Qur’an.

The media office of the Prime Minister confirmed that the emergency meeting, which was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani, condemned the burning of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, while noting that the Iraqi government had informed its Swedish counterpart to go to sever diplomatic relations in the event of a repeat of the incident of burning the Noble Qur’an.

And the Swedish embassy in Baghdad was set on fire at dawn on Thursday, during a demonstration organized by supporters of Muqtada al-Sadr, as witnessed by an AFP correspondent, on the eve of a gathering in Sweden in front of the Iraqi embassy whose organizer intends to burn a copy of the Quran.

During the emergency meeting, it was decided to refer those responsible for the burning of the embassy, who were arrested, to the judiciary, as well as to refer the negligent security officials to investigation, and to take legal measures against them, and in this regard, the Iraqi government renews its assurances of commitment to the security and protection of all diplomatic missions, and to confront any attack targeting them.

Iraq condemns the continuation of the Swedish authorities in such provocative positions to the beliefs and sanctities of others.
