AMMAN May 20 2026: Middle East University (MEU) celebrated the 80th Independence Day of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in a national event that carried political and cultural messages. The ceremony emphasized Jordan's position as a model of stability and moderation within a rapidly changing regional environment marked by complex challenges.
The ceremony was held under the patronage of the Chairman of the University's Board of Trustees, Dr. Yacoub Nasser al-Din, and attended by the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Salam Al-Mahadin, alongside diplomatic, parliamentary, security, and academic figures, as well as students from various Arab communities.
Senate Member, Senator Hussein Al-Hawatmeh, stated that the Kingdom's Independence Day constitutes a pivotal national milestone in the history of the modern Jordanian state, carrying profound significance tied to human development, institutional consolidation, and the strengthening of national identity. He praised the role universities play in cementing the values of belonging among the youth and connecting them with major national milestones and state history.
Al-Hawatmeh pointed out that Jordan enters its second centennial amid a regional and international phase full of transformations, which requires a deeper understanding of independence as an ongoing project focused on building a strong state capable of keeping pace with changes while maintaining its national principles. He added that since its founding, Jordan has faced complex geopolitical challenges, limited resources, and regional unrest, yet managed through the wisdom of its Hashemite leadership and the cohesion of its people to transform those challenges into opportunities for growth, becoming a model of security, stability, and institutional development.
For his part, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Middle East University, Dr. Yacoub Nasser al-Din, during a speech in the ceremony moderated by journalist Prof. Dr. Hani Al-Badri, emphasized that the Independence Day embodies a continuous national journey. He noted that this path is built on consolidating national, pan-Arab, and human identity, reinforcing the values of the modern state established by the Hashemites from the founding of the Emirate to the present day under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein. He added that national awareness today forms one of the most important pillars of security in the country, stressing that Jordan will remain capable of overcoming challenges and continuing its journey with confidence and stability.
In turn, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Hazem Al-Nsoor, indicated that the 80th anniversary of independence represents a deeply rooted national milestone in the hearts of Jordanians and an embodiment of the modern state founded on sovereignty, dignity, and free will under the Hashemites. He added that May 25th stands as "the glory of a homeland and the memory of a nation," marking the liberation of national will from the mandate and the launch of the modernization process toward a state based on law and institutions.
The ceremony included national and artistic segments that reflected the symbolism of independence in Jordanian memory, featuring poetry and dialogue sessions. The Jordanian Armed Forces Band performed musical displays reflecting Jordanian military heritage and national pride, alongside performances by the university choir and the Fursan Al-Salt troupe, which presented artistic and traditional shows celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Jordan.
