New York - Today, Tuesday, Ghana assumes the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of November, succeeding Gabon.
The Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations, Ambassador Harold Adlai Agyemanth, will hold a press conference this afternoon to brief the accredited press on the Council's work program after it has been approved in this morning's session as well.
The Council consists of 15 members, each member has one vote, including five permanent members, who have the right of veto, and they are Russia, China, France, Britain and the United States of America, and ten non-permanent members, elected for a period of two years by the General Assembly, and they are, in addition to Ghana: United Arab Emirates, Brazil, India, Ireland, Albania, Kenya, Mexico, Norway and Gabon.
The Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, which includes the General Secretariat, the General Assembly and the International Court of Justice, in addition to the Trusteeship Council and the Economic and Social Council.
