The contours of "reverse motion" within Trump's mindset have not only surfaced through Washington's reported refusal of a Saudi request for the United States to lead the confrontation against the Houthis. Rather, Trump views applying pressure to counter perceived insubordination as a final resort to disrupt the stagnant political landscape surrounding him. A Saudi entanglement in Yemeni attrition hinders Riyadh's moves to distance itself from the U.S. while bearing the burden of alleviating the effects of the Iran blockade. While reconsidering the Mecca Agreement might seem beneficial for Saudi Arabia, Trump rarely settles for such a price.
This pattern extends beyond a single instance to cases where Washington leverages its allies to restrict one another's options, as seen in inciting Ethiopia against its neighbors following the Mecca Accord. Fear of potential Egyptian participation in the agreement may be a significant driver, yet lingering Gulf rivalries beneath sphere-of-influence states hold greater weight. This is underscored by mutual accusations among Sudan, Ethiopia, Chad, and Libya regarding host camps for the Rapid Support Forces, contrasted with Egypt's balanced relations with both Sudan and the UAE. Egypt's cautious posture displeases Trump, who perceives it with the same skepticism he currently holds toward those around him, including members of his own administration.
Ensuring deep-seated division was not the sole motive behind U.S. efforts to broker the Libyan agreement—a deal that entrenches the control of certain factions at the expense of others and faced opposition from the Libyan public itself. Having been forced to abandon dreams of achieving peace, Trump now inspects every detail to deny surrounding actors the credit of departing from his approach. This comes after Trump brought these figures to prominence twice: first during his inauguration, and second when he positioned them in global political spotlight while pushing them back once his calculations failed to shield them from the anger of the American public and the world over his recklessness.
Trump crafted policy effectively for his country prior to contemplating a strike on Iran—a move concerning which we previously observed that an attack on Iran would lead to his own undoing, which has ultimately transpired. However, his commercial drive and unyielding enthusiasm led him down a path that undermined foundations from below, turning measures that were initially advantageous for his country into detriments due to his sanction regimes and conflicts, thereby diminishing the efficacy of the sanctions themselves and his ability to sustain them.
This shift in Trump's psychological posture will visibly impact his relations even with Israel. Israel regards its fate as intertwined with Trump's in pursuing its conflicts independently, particularly as signs of abandonment emerge alongside Trump's perception of rebellion against him. Israel's attempt to establish a waterway near Oman as an alternative to the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab will not remain an isolated element in these fracturing dynamics. Trump's frustration will grow more evident as his tenure draws toward its close, even as Khamenei's recent outreach to Islamic nations aims to exploit these emerging anxieties.
