US President Donald Trump said in comments to Fox News that Iran cannot be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon, stressing flatly that it "won't."
Trump said an Iranian nuclear weapon would lead to the near-disappearance of the Middle East, arguing Israel would certainly be wiped out, and that the United States, Europe, or elsewhere could be next in line.
He said the US had to intervene in the Middle East to stop Iran from using a nuclear weapon against Israel, regional states, and possibly the United States itself.
On the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said that once the war is won, the US will have near-total control over the strait, adding that Iran might prove a nuisance, but that the US controls the strait and has cleared all mines from it with very limited help from other countries.
Trump said the US cannot keep supporting countries that don't stand with it, noting Washington spends billions of dollars helping NATO and countries including South Korea, yet these countries refused to help when the US asked for it.
He went on: "Iran has become a failed state because of the blockade on its ports and American financial pressure." Trump also said Iran's Kharg Island has been completely destroyed and reduced to rubble.
