Mohammad Al-Zarou, a representative of the Jordan Automobile Dealers and Distributors Association, said prices of several American car models have dropped since their exemption from the special tax took effect on August 1, though he noted the decision's effect on overall market activity remains limited given how recently it was implemented.
Al-Zarou said the decision has had a positive effect on prices for a number of models, but that its impact on market activity so far remains limited, adding it's still too early to judge its full effects given how new the measure is. He explained the exemption applies only to vehicles meeting the conditions set out in the decision, and that price changes have varied by vehicle category.
He said the biggest price drops came on gasoline-engine vehicles, with smaller drops on hybrids and electric vehicles, noting the decision covers a limited range of models — chiefly large four-wheel-drive vehicles, luxury sedans, and sports cars. Al-Zarou noted the benefit could extend to Japanese and other brands that manufacture their vehicles inside the United States, provided they meet the rules of origin and the rest of the exemption's conditions.
He said the decision's real impact will become clearer as new vehicle shipments from the US arrive in the local market, since the exemption applies specifically to new vehicles meeting the specified conditions.
