​United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a brief statement on Tuesday on platform X that it launched new airstrikes on Iran.
​It stated, "Today, at 12:00 PM (16:00 GMT), U.S. forces began striking Revolutionary Guard targets in Iran," adding that this comes in response to "recent attacks launched by the Revolutionary Guard on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and on U.S. military personnel deployed in the region."
​Iranian television stated Tuesday evening that "the sound of explosions was heard on Qeshm Island without official confirmation."
​The attacks come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran in the vicinity of the strait, which is considered one of the most important maritime transit corridors for global energy.
​Axios had reported on Monday that U.S. President Donald Trump and his senior aides were studying the execution of limited military strikes against Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to prevent Iran from rebuilding radar systems, air defense, and anti-ship missiles used in targeting maritime navigation.
​According to the website, U.S. Central Command "CENTCOM" prepared the plan over the past week, gaining the support of U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth amid U.S. concerns over Iranian attempts to rebuild its military capabilities around the strait.
​The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced late Monday that a ship was hit by three "unidentified projectiles" while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire on board.
​UKMTO reported via platform "X" that a tanker "was struck by three unidentified projectiles while exiting the Strait of Hormuz. No human casualties or environmental damage were recorded," noting that the incident occurred at a distance of 17 nautical miles (31 kilometers) east of the Omani city of Khasab.
