Israeli occupation army minister Yoav Galant accused Iran on Monday of establishing an airport in southern Lebanon. To enable attacks on Israel.
Israel is concerned about the Iranian nuclear program, Tehran's development of its missile capabilities, and its support for armed groups in the region.
The Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah group fought a war with Israel in 2006. But this year, a few incidents occurred along the border and the two sides exchanged angry statements.
In televised remarks at an international security conference hosted by Reichman University, Gallant showed aerial photos of what he said was an airport he built.
Gallant did not provide further details, but added that the site could accommodate medium-sized aircraft. The place mentioned by Gallant is located near the village of Barkat Jabour and the Lebanese city of Jezzine, which are about 20 kilometers north of the town of Metula on the border with Israel.
Neither Hezbollah nor Iranian officials have yet provided a response to Gallant's statements.
A non-Israeli source familiar with the site said that it could accommodate large drones, some of which are armed, similar to those produced by Iran.
The source added that the drones that may be launched from this location could be used for internal and external operational activities, but stated that the nature and direction of the flight runway indicate that it will most likely be used internally.
The source indicated that Hezbollah is making significant investments in the field of drone technology.
Gallant said that there is an Iranian effort to another dangerous front on Israel's borders with Jordan, which has a peace treaty with Israel "through Shiite militias operating and stationed in Iraq."
He did not clarify the scope of the front, nor did he go into detail about how this was achieved.
It is widely believed that Israel possesses a nuclear arsenal, but it neither confirms nor denies this.
Gallant also pointed to divisions in Israeli society over the planned judicial changes that have sparked mass protests, and some reservists said they would refuse the call-up if the legislation passed.
“The continuation of the internal conflict jeopardizes the national steadfastness, the IDF, and our ability to provide security for the State of Israel,” Gallant said.
