Academic and researcher in economic affairs, Muhammad al-Hadab, said that the cost of Syrian asylum to Jordan's economy amounted to about 44 billion US dollars, of which the international community provided only 10 billion, and the local economy bore the rest of the direct and indirect costs of 34 billion dollars.
Al-Hadab explained that the direct cost prepared by the Ministry of Planning with the participation of the international community is estimated at $2.2 billion to $2.8 billion annually, with a total of $19.4 billion in the period from 2015 to 2022.
As for the indirect cost, which is not usually indicated, between Al-Hadab, it was estimated, according to a study presented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 2016, about 24 billion in 8 years, at a rate of 3.1 to 3.4 billion dollars annually.
Al-Hadab demonstrated these numbers through a detailed explanation of graphic indicators that showed that the poverty rate in Jordan was 14% in 2010, while it reached 24% in 2022.
In an indicator about income inequality, he pointed to a noticeable rise, as it was 33.6 points in 2010 and reached 40.0 in 2018.
Al-Hadab indicated that there is a decrease in the rate of growth in the gross domestic product, as the Jordanian growth rate before the Syrian asylum was 5.5%, while it was 2% in the period from 2010 to 2022.
As for unemployment, the indicators showed that it was 12.5% in 2010, while it reached about 25% in 2021.
Al-Hadab said that the international community had failed Jordan over the Syrian refugee file, calling on the government to provide evidence and economic indicators to the world so that they could be taken into consideration, stressing that the purpose of its presentation was not that refugees were not wanted on the territory of the Kingdom, but rather to send a message to the international community of the need to support Jordan economically so that it would be reflected. Positively for citizens and refugees.
