The 33rd ordinary session of the Arab League Council at the summit level commences on Thursday in Bahrain, marking the first time it has convened at the level of regular or emergency summits.
The Arab Summit convenes against the backof the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since October 7th, with ceasefire negotiations reaching a deadlock.
The head of the Saudi delegation will hand over the presidency of the previous summit to Bahrain after delivering Saudi Arabia’s speech at the opening session.
The summit’s proceedings will begin at 11 AM, where the Bahraini monarch, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, will deliver the current summit presidency speech following Saudi Arabia.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, will deliver the league’s speech.
Following Aboul Gheit’s speech, the leaders and heads of states will deliver their addresses. “Al-Mamlaka” has learned that invitations have been extended to the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, and a European official.
A session to ratify decisions will be held after a break, followed by the issuance of the final statement (Bahrain Declaration).
A press conference will be held at the media center at 5:00 PM.
The current Arab Summit takes place under delicate circumstances, as the Arab nation faces a critical historical phase amid escalating global political, economic, and social challenges.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, a diplomatic source told “Al-Mamlaka” that the Arab Summit is likely to endorse a call for an international peace conference to resolve the Palestinian issue under the auspices of the United Nations, to be held in Bahrain.
The summit will discuss the Palestinian issue file, the Arab-Israeli conflict and its developments, Arab affairs and national security, international political matters, and economic, social, media, and legal affairs.
According to “Al-Mamlaka,” the leaders’ summit level will address the Palestinian issue, which is the central issue, by activating the Arab Peace Initiative, monitoring Israeli violations in occupied Jerusalem, settlement developments, colonial expansion, the apartheid wall, prisoners, refugees, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Support for the State of Palestine’s budget is also included under the Palestinian issue agenda.
Bahrain will spare no effort to ensure the summit’s success and the emergence of decisions and recommendations that serve common interests and just Arab causes.
Through joint Arab action, Bahrain seeks to support peace and development in Sudan and monitor developments in Libya and Yemen.
The Arab street looks forward to the summit’s outcomes concerning the situation in the Gaza Strip, especially with the escalation of military operations and the Israeli occupation forces’ attempts to launch a broad attack on the city of Rafah in the southern part of the Strip.
The situation in Gaza has humanitarian and security impacts on the region but is part of the Palestinian issue in the future of the two-state solution. Therefore, the summit will explore on its agenda the necessary steps towards the Palestinian issue, especially after the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution supporting Palestine’s membership in the United Nations, a step that entails additional efforts to achieve full membership.
The Arab street also hopes that the current summit will contribute to unity and consensus, recognizing that the real danger is not only on Gaza but on all countries in the region, some of which face challenges and crises, including the Libyan crisis, the Yemeni crisis, the situation in Sudan, and efforts made for Arab unity, territorial integrity, and Arab affairs from any external interventions, global climate change, Arab national security, counter-terrorism, and the development of the Arab system to combat terrorism.
His Majesty King Abdullah II will lead the Jordanian delegation during the 33rd Arab Summit proceedings.
