On Wednesday, Israel summoned its ambassadors in Ireland and Norway for “emergency consultations” following these countries’ moves toward recognizing Palestine as a state.
In a statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said, “Today, I send a strong message to Ireland and Norway: Israel will not remain silent on this matter. I have instructed the Israeli ambassadors in Dublin and Oslo to return to Israel for further consultations.”
According to Lapid, the “hasty steps” taken by both countries will have serious consequences, and if Spain follows through on its promise to recognize the Palestinian state, Israel will take retaliatory measures.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Wednesday that Spain will recognize Palestine as of May 28.
Lapid also stated that “Ireland and Norway intend to send a message to the Palestinians and the entire world that terrorism is futile.”
He added, "This misguided step by these countries is an injustice to the memory of the victims of October 7th."123
