Dr. Ziad Al-Zu’bi, the head of the Jordanian Medical Association, and Dr. Fawzi Al-Hamouri, the director-general of speciality Hospital and deputy chairman of the Gaza Health Initiative, honored the Jordanian and Arab medical team that volunteered at the European Gaza Hospital in Khan Yunis since the end of April. The team arrived in Jordan on the evening of May 21, 2024, after completing their mission and facing challenges due to the Israeli invasion of Rafah and the subsequent closure of the border crossing.

Dr. Al-Hamouri praised the exceptional efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein in facilitating their safe exit. His Majesty directed the Jordanian Armed Forces to coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ensuring their transfer through the Kerem Shalom crossing to the King Hussein Bridge and onward to the Jordanian capital, Amman. The medical team’s heroic role in assisting their brothers and sisters in Gaza, saving the lives of thousands of wounded and sick individuals, was commendable.

Dr. Ziad Al-Zu’bi expressed pride in the team’s bravery and determination to work under exceptional circumstances, risking their lives during the brutal aggression by the Israeli forces, which disregarded international laws and norms. He extended gratitude to His Majesty King Abdullah II for his unwavering support to the people in Gaza.

The honored medical team consisted of 16 doctors and nurses, including 9 Jordanians and 7 from Oman, Egypt, Sudan, the United States, and Australia. They insisted on leaving together as they had entered. Additionally, several Jordanian doctors who returned from Gaza during the past period were also recognized.

Arab doctors expressed their gratitude and appreciation to Jordan—its king, government, and people—for the facilitation and warm reception. They also thanked Dr. Fawzi Al-Hamouri for his continuous follow-up and coordination with official authorities to ensure their safe exit from the region. During their time at the European Gaza Hospital, they witnessed the collapse of the healthcare system, severe shortages of medicines, medical supplies, electricity, water, and basic necessities. They also witnessed the immense destruction suffered by Gaza. Most of the casualties were children and women. Despite the tragic conditions, the Palestinian people in Gaza demonstrated remarkable patience and resilience, especially their fellow Palestinian doctors working tirelessly in hospitals under extraordinary circumstances. The international community was urged to protect the remaining hospitals and health centers in Gaza and reopen the Rafah crossing for the entry of medical and humanitarian aid, as well as additional medical teams.
