A jury convicted Hunter Biden yesterday, "Tuesday," on federal charges related to firearm possession.
This marks the first criminal trial in history targeting the son of a sitting U.S. president. The son of President Joe Biden, aged 54, was found guilty on all three criminal charges linked to his purchase of a firearm in 2018 when he was addicted to drugs. The verdict comes at a time when his father is seeking a second presidential term and coincides with a scheduled speech by the president on gun violence.
In a statement issued by the White House after the trial concluded in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden expressed his "love and support" for his son.
"I am the president, but I am also a parent. Jill, the First Lady, and I love our son, and we are proud of him today," said Biden.
He added, "Many families with loved ones who have struggled with addiction understand the pride you feel when you see someone you love overcome it and such strength and resilience in their recovery.
"He affirmed, "I will accept the outcome of this case and continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.
"The 12-member jury deliberated for three hours over two days before reaching a verdict.Hunter Biden did not testify during the week-long trial. First Lady Jill Biden attended several days of the trial.Hunter could face a prison sentence of up to 25 years; however, imprisonment is unlikely due to his lack of prior criminal record.
The verdict comes less than two weeks after Donald Trump, the leading Republican candidate likely to challenge President Joe Biden in the upcoming November elections, was convicted on charges related to business fraud. This trial, along with another case where Hunter faces tax evasion charges in California, has complicated the Democrats' efforts to keep the election focus on Trump, the first former president in history to be convicted of a crime.
