Former U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with the New York Post following his survival of an assassination attempt the day before yesterday, stated, "I should be dead," describing the experience as "surreal."
Speaking to the newspaper from his plane en route to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, where his presidential candidacy for the November election is expected to be confirmed, Trump said, "I wasn’t supposed to be here. I should be dead."
Trump recounted the "surreal experience" while wearing a white bandage over his right ear.
He mentioned that if he had not tilted his head slightly to the right to read a chart on illegal immigrants during his campaign rally speech, he would have been killed.
"By luck or by God, many people say I’m still here because of God," Trump said, praising the Secret Service agents for killing the shooter. "They took him down with one shot between the eyes. They did a fantastic job. It's surreal for all of us."
Trump's image of raising his fist after the shooting, while being escorted by Secret Service agents, dominated headlines worldwide and spread rapidly on social media.
The former Republican president told the newspaper, "Many people say it’s the most remarkable photo they’ve ever seen. They’re right, and I didn’t die. Usually, you have to die to get such a remarkable and famous picture."
Trump said he is rewriting the speech he had prepared for the Republican Convention after the assassination attempt, explaining that he initially prepared a "very harsh" speech about President Joe Biden’s "terrible administration," but decided to replace it with one he hopes will "unite our country."
