Ramallah - The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced the assassination of its political bureau chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Hamas stated that their leader "was killed in a treacherous Zionist airstrike on his residence in Tehran."

In another statement, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard said, "We are examining the dimensions of Haniyeh's martyrdom incident in Tehran" and will announce the investigation results later.

The Iranian news agency reported that Ismail Haniyeh and one of his personal guards were martyred as a result of targeting their residence in Tehran.

Haniyeh was visiting Tehran to participate in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Bezeshkian.
