Jordan Olympic Committee: Medical Plan in Case of Athlete Contracting COVID-19 at Olympics
Rum – The Jordan Olympic Committee has set a "comprehensive medical plan" in case any of its athletes participating in the Paris Olympics contracts or is suspected of contracting COVID-19, the committee announced on Wednesday. This comes after approximately 40 cases of the virus were detected during the ongoing Olympic events.
Hamza Hasan, the committee's Director of Media, confirmed that "none of the Jordanian team" present at the Paris 2024 Olympics has contracted COVID-19.
Hasan detailed the plan set by the Olympic Committee "in case any member of the Jordanian team contracts COVID-19 at the Paris Olympics, or if any member of the Jordanian delegation is suspected of having the virus."
The plan includes "isolating the infected or suspected person from the rest of the team and other individuals," and "providing a designated isolation area that complies with health guidelines." Additionally, it involves notifying local health authorities, the organizing committee, and the Olympic medical committee of the infected case.
Hasan spoke about "immediate testing for the rest of the team and those who had close contact with the infected person," and "regularly monitoring the cases to ensure the virus does not spread," along with "providing the necessary medical care for the infected individuals."
The plan also ensures "the availability of necessary medications and medical equipment" and "training the medical team on preventive measures and handling infection cases," along with "providing guidance on personal hygiene and ways to prevent the virus."
If the infected person needs to return to Jordan, the Jordan Olympic Committee has laid out procedures for this scenario.
Hasan mentioned "setting procedures for transporting the infected person to Jordan if necessary, while considering all health and preventive measures," as well as "arranging a safe transportation method for the infected person to ensure no further transmission."
He noted that "informing the infected person's family of their health status and the measures taken, and providing necessary information to the media while maintaining the privacy of the infected person" is also part of the plan, in addition to "continually reviewing and adjusting the procedures based on the situation's development and health authorities' guidance."
On Tuesday, the World Health Organization announced that at least 40 athletes participating in the Olympics had tested positive for COVID-19 but stated that this was not surprising given the high number of cases worldwide.
