On Thursday evening, August 9, 2024, Zaid Mustafa, a graduate of Amman Al-Ahliyya University and a member of the national taekwondo team, achieved a historic feat by winning the silver medal in the under 68 kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Mustafa reached the final of the taekwondo competition after defeating the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, British athlete Bradley Sinden.
Earlier in the competition, Mustafa overcame Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist and recent world champion, Turkish athlete Hakan Reçber, to advance to the semifinals. Before that, he defeated Brazilian athlete Pontes Edival to secure his place in the quarterfinals.
Despite a commendable performance, Mustafa lost in the final to Ulugbek Rashitov, the Tokyo 2021 gold medalist and the world’s top-ranked athlete. As a result, Zaid Mustafa was awarded the silver medal.
Professor Dr. Sari Hamdan, President of Amman Al-Ahliyya University, and Dr. Maher Hourani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, expressed their pride in this significant achievement. They congratulated Zaid Mustafa, emphasizing the university's excellence through the accomplishments of its students and graduates. They also praised Mustafa's outstanding athletic performance.
In recognition of Mustafa’s athletic prowess, the university’s Olympic Preparation Center has awarded him a full scholarship to study physical education and health at Amman Al-Ahliyya University.
It is worth noting that Zaid Mustafa was unable to attend his graduation ceremony this term due to his participation in the Paris Olympics. However, he will be honored in a manner befitting a champion of both Jordan and Amman Al-Ahliyya University upon his return home.
