On August 21, 2024, RUM reported that Haitham Misto, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, announced that five global airlines have temporarily suspended their flights to the region, including Jordan, due to regional tensions in the Middle East.
Misto stated on Wednesday that the airlines suspending their flights to Amman include the German airline Lufthansa, which has halted flights until August 26, United Airlines until September 15, Austrian Airlines until August 26, Greek national carrier Aegean Airlines indefinitely, and the Spanish airline Vueling until October 31.
He clarified that the temporary suspension is a precautionary measure by the airlines, not just for Jordan but for most Eastern Mediterranean countries.
Misto noted that the suspension accounts for no more than 3% of the total air traffic to and from Jordan, adding that these airlines operate flights to Amman at a low frequency.
He assured that alternative airlines are available from the countries these airlines operate in, meaning that direct connectivity with the Kingdom has not been affected.
The decision to suspend flights comes as global airlines exercise caution due to the potential for the conflict in the Middle East to escalate.
