Amman – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates strongly condemned the targeting of a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) employee by an Israeli sniper in the occupied West Bank, calling it a heinous crime that adds to the list of Israel’s violations, which have already claimed the lives of 220 UNRWA staffers in Gaza. The ministry stressed the need to hold those responsible for these crimes accountable and ensure they do not escape punishment.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Ambassador Sufian Qudah, reaffirmed Jordan's firm rejection and strong condemnation of this crime, describing it as a flagrant and serious violation of international law and international humanitarian law, particularly the 1949 Geneva Convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. He also referenced United Nations Security Council resolutions aimed at protecting humanitarian workers and UN staff, most recently Resolution 2730 (2024). He emphasised the need to protect civilians, critical facilities providing essential services to Palestinians, as well as humanitarian centres and shelters.
Ambassador Qudah further called for an immediate halt to Israel’s dangerous escalation in the occupied West Bank and its attacks on Palestinian land. He warned of a potential regional crisis if Israeli violations in the West Bank and aggression on Gaza continue.
The ambassador renewed Jordan's call for the international community to uphold its legal and moral responsibilities, urging it to pressure Israel into ceasing its continuous violations, aggression on Gaza, and the dangerous escalation in the West Bank. He also called for serious efforts to provide the necessary protection for the Palestinian people and ensure their legitimate rights to freedom and the establishment of an independent, sovereign state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
