the Israeli military officially confirmed the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, during airstrikes that targeted the party’s central command in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, on Friday evening.
Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee also announced on the platform X that the military had killed Ali Karaki, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, along with several other leaders during the same airstrikes.
In his first comment on the successful assassination operation, Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi stated, “The attack was planned for a long time and executed at the right time,” adding, “This is not the last of our actions; the message is simple: anyone who threatens Israeli citizens will be reached.”
Earlier, other Israeli officials told the New York Times that the initial assessment by Israeli intelligence agencies was that Nasrallah had been killed.
One official mentioned that Friday’s airstrike aimed to break Hezbollah’s power by killing its senior leaders. If successful, it would allow Israel to avoid a ground invasion of the country.
The official considered the death of Hezbollah’s Secretary-General a “decisive blow to the party’s political and military organization in Lebanon and any further violent plans by Iran.”
