French President Emmanuel Macron called on Saturday for an end to arms deliveries to Israel for the war in Gaza, stating that the priority should be a political solution to the year-long conflict.
In an interview with "France Inter," Macron said, "I believe the priority today is to return to a political solution and stop delivering weapons for battles in Gaza."
He affirmed during this interview, which was recorded on October 1st, that France "is not delivering" any weapons.
US President Joe Biden has so far opposed delivering certain types of weapons to Israel, suspending the shipment of specific bombs in May.
In September, the UK announced the suspension of 30 out of 350 arms export licenses to Israel, citing a "clear risk" they could be used in serious violations of international humanitarian law in the Gaza war.
The French President expressed regret that the situation in Gaza remains unchanged despite all diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire, particularly with Israel.
Macron said, "I believe we have not been heard; I reiterated this to Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu, and I think it's a mistake, even for Israel's future security."
He added, "This is evident in public opinion, and even more so in the region’s public opinion. It's fundamentally breeding resentment and fueling hatred."
After the launch of the Israeli operation against Hezbollah, the Iran-aligned group in Lebanon, Macron noted that "the priority is to avoid escalation."
He emphasized that "the Lebanese people cannot also be sacrificed, and Lebanon cannot become another Gaza."
