Turkish Airlines announced on Wednesday the death of one of its pilots while flying a route from the United States to Istanbul, Turkey.

A company spokesperson stated that the co-pilot and first officer took control of the aircraft and made an emergency landing after the pilot suffered a medical emergency and did not respond to first aid efforts. Unfortunately, he passed away before the emergency landing could be completed.

The Airbus A350 landed in New York, and arrangements were made to transfer the passengers to Turkey, according to the BBC.

The airline noted that the pilot, Ilçin Behlivan, 59, had been with Turkish Airlines since 2007 and underwent routine medical examinations in early March, which revealed no health issues that could have impacted his role.
