Early on Saturday, the Israeli occupation army launched strikes on Iran, targeting missile batteries and factories, while Tehran confirmed it had suffered an Israeli attack that "caused limited damage."
The Israeli occupation army warned Tehran that it "would pay a heavy price" if it initiated a new round of escalation.
Israel had pledged to respond to the Iranian ballistic missile attack on 1 October. This was the second Iranian attack on Israel, following a strike on 13 April.
Shortly before 6 a.m., the Israeli army announced the end of its airstrikes on military targets in Iran.
It added that "based on intelligence, Israeli Air Force planes bombed facilities where Iran produced the missiles launched at Israel over the past year."
Tehran confirmed that an Israeli attack targeted military sites in Tehran and other areas in the country, causing "limited damage."
Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee stated early in the morning that the army was "precisely targeting military objectives in Iran in response to the ongoing Iranian regime's attacks against Israel in recent months."
The escalation came amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which has expanded for over a month into Lebanon, resulting in an open conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah and Hamas are part of the "Resistance Axis" led by Iran.
The Israeli occupation army stated on Saturday that it was "on high alert both offensively and defensively" following its announcement of the attack's commencement.
A statement read, "The Iranian regime and its allies in the region have not ceased their attacks on Israel since 7 October (2023) — across seven fronts — including attacks launched from Iranian territory (...). Israel has both the right and duty to respond. The IDF is prepared for both offensive and defensive operations."
Following the outbreak of war in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon opened a "support front" for Hamas against Israel.
Iran launched its first attack on Israel in response to an Israeli raid on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, which killed leaders and members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The second attack came in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and a Revolutionary Guard commander in Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs on 27 September, along with the killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in an attack attributed to Israel in Tehran on 31 July.
