The path of community-driven innovation may be long, but each step makes a difference. With this belief, Orange Jordan held the closing ceremony for the 2024 Orange Summer Challenge, hosted under the umbrella of Orange Digital Centers at the Innovation Hub in Abdali's Orange Digital Village.
Each year, the Orange Summer Challenge invites university students to join a three-month journey with Orange, transforming their ideas into actionable, impactful projects. This year, participants benefited for the first time from the expertise and skills offered by four major Orange programs: the Coding School, the Digital Fabrication Lab, BIG by Orange, and the Innovation Hub.
This year’s challenge, held under the theme "Tech4Impact," was organized in partnership with Nokia, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Ernst & Young (EY). It focused on developing participants' entrepreneurial skills to solutions addressing social challenges. After three months of capacity-building, participants presented their ideas to a panel of judges, with the top three winners announced during the final ceremony.
Audience members and judges voted through the Votepad app, with audience votes making up 40% of the final score and judges’ scores contributing the remaining 60%.
Orange Jordan CEO Philippe Mansour emphasized that the participants' project ideas demonstrated how technology can be harnessed to serve communities and enhance innovation. He expressed pride that the first-place project from Jordan will advance to the regional finals for Orange Middle East and Africa, where projects from across the region will contribute to positive community impact.
The winning projects were:
1. ARFL – a solution to fill road potholes, taking first place.
2. SAVERBOT – a tool assisting rescue teams in locating survivors during disasters and crises, awarded second place.
3. Phytobase Solutions – an agriculture-focused solution that helps farmers monitor crop conditions by measuring soil and air temperatures, taking third place.
Notably, this year’s Orange Summer Challenge reached new heights, launching in 14 countries across the Middle East and Africa with 382 participants, forming 57 teams, who joined the journey as local community influencers.
