Amman – The Faculty of Media at Middle East University (MEU) hosted a special event to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, honouring TRT Arabic correspondent Sami Barhoum and Jordanian doctor Bilal Azzam, who recently returned from Gaza.
The event, aimed at raising students' awareness of the media's role in conveying truth and highlighting the suffering of Gaza's people under siege, brought together prominent Palestinian journalists, activists, and Jordanian figures, providing a rich experience reflecting the university's commitment to its humanitarian and educational mission.
Dr. Hanan Al-Sheikh, Dean of the Faculty of Media, emphasised the centrality of the Palestinian cause to the collective Jordanian and Arab conscience. Addressing faculty members and students, she highlighted the strategic role of media in reinforcing the Palestinian narrative, exposing the occupation's violations, and delivering Gaza's plight to the international community in a manner that appeals to human conscience while countering efforts to obscure the truth and silence the oppressed.
Speaking via video conference, TRT Arabic correspondent Sami Barhoum underscored the sacrifices of journalists in Gaza, who have become symbols of truth, risking their lives to bear witness to the Palestinian people's suffering. He noted the challenges of reporting in a world saturated with misinformation and attempts to distort reality.
Dr. Azzam, on the other hand, stressed that Gaza is not merely a tragedy to recount or a story relegated to the margins of global events. It is a profound humanitarian issue reflecting the daily agony of an entire population under siege. He called for collective moral and human responsibility to amplify Gaza's voice, warning against the dangers of allowing this crisis to fade from global awareness. He urged unified media efforts to keep the Palestinian cause alive in the world's consciousness.
The event also featured impactful messages from renowned journalists in Gaza. Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al-Sharif shared a moving testimony documenting the challenges of reporting under grave violations. This was followed by reporter Mahmoud Al-Amoudi, who shed light on the dire humanitarian conditions in northern Gaza, describing them as an enduring scar on collective memory. Activist Saleh Al-Ja'frawi concluded with an urgent call to leverage social media as a powerful tool to amplify Palestinian voices and expose their suffering to the world.
This event reflects MEU's vision to prepare a new generation of media professionals who go beyond traditional practices to embrace a profound sense of human responsibility. It embodies a mission to empower the media to champion just causes with unwavering professionalism and enlightened awareness.
