The US administration of President Joe Biden has notified Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms deal with Israel, according to Axios on Friday. The package includes munitions for fighter jets and attack helicopters.

The report noted that the deal, which requires approval from House and Senate committees, includes artillery shells and air-to-air missiles for fighter jets to counter threats such as drones.

The US State Department has yet to comment.

An American official told Axios, “The President has made clear that Israel has the right to defend its citizens, in line with international law and international humanitarian law, and to deter aggression from Iran and allied organizations.”

The package also reportedly includes small-diameter bombs and warheads.

Diplomatic efforts have so far failed to end Israel's ongoing 15-month war on Gaza.

President Joe Biden is set to leave office on January 20, with President-elect Donald Trump to succeed him.
