Since the onset of the Arab Spring in 2011, the region has undergone significant transformations, deeply affecting many countries. Jordan has been at the heart of these changes, playing a pivotal role in supporting its Syrian neighbours while addressing the security and economic challenges arising from regional crises.
From the start of the Syrian crisis, Jordan welcomed a large number of Syrian refugees, with some estimates exceeding 1.3 million. The Kingdom provided them with shelter, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. By 2023, Jordan had issued 90,000 new work permits to Syrians, with a total of 340,000 permits granted free of charge, reflecting its commitment to offering economic opportunities for both refugees and host communities.
Beyond economic burdens, Jordan has faced significant challenges in securing its borders against drug smuggling, particularly Captagon, which poses a growing threat. The northern border has become a major transit point for these substances, prompting increased security measures. Politicians and security officials have emphasized that Jordan is waging a real war to combat drug trafficking and prevent its spread locally and regionally.
Thanks to the wisdom of the Hashemite leadership and its adept diplomacy in managing regional crises, His Majesty King Abdullah II has maintained a balanced approach—supporting the Syrian people’s right to freedom and dignity while safeguarding Jordan’s national interests and security. Even after the fall of the Syrian regime, Jordan continued to support its Syrian neighbours, offering assistance in various areas, including electrical connectivity, underscoring its commitment to regional stability.
In addition to security challenges, Jordan has faced economic pressures from hosting Syrian refugees, straining its resources and infrastructure. Despite these obstacles, the Kingdom has adapted through international cooperation and policies aimed at improving economic opportunities for refugees and host communities alike.
Looking ahead, Jordan’s role remains critical in promoting regional stability and supporting Syria’s political process. Following Syria's complex circumstances, the Kingdom can facilitate reconstruction efforts through technical and economic assistance, as well as by combating terrorism and preventing drug smuggling along the border.
By strengthening security and economic coordination with Syria, Jordan can continue to serve as a bridge between Arab nations and the broader region. It will play a vital role in supporting the Syrian people and rebuilding the state in the post-conflict phase.
Under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, Jordan has demonstrated its ability to navigate regional challenges with wisdom and diplomacy, safeguarding its national interests while supporting Syrian neighbours. This steadfast commitment to regional stability and refugee assistance highlights the Kingdom’s pivotal role in the region.
