A new wildfire broke out Wednesday evening north of Los Angeles, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes in an area recently hit by devastating fires, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The fire rapidly spread near Castaic Lake, burning through 1,400 hectares in less than two hours, fueled by strong, hot, and dry winds.

Evacuation orders were issued for approximately 31,000 people around the lake, located about 56 kilometers north of Los Angeles and near Santa Clarita.

This wildfire comes as the Los Angeles area is still grappling with the aftermath of two massive fires that claimed over 20 lives and destroyed thousands of structures.

Southern California has not seen any rainfall in nearly eight months, leaving the countryside dry despite January being the middle of the region’s rainy season.
