U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is pressuring Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab countries to accept more Palestinian refugees from Gaza following the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel's war on the territory.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump revealed details of his call with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, commending Jordan for successfully hosting Palestinian refugees. "I told him I’d like him to take in more Palestinians because Gaza is in total chaos—a real mess," Trump said. "I want him to accept more people."
Trump added that he also wants Egypt to take in refugees, noting plans to discuss the matter with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi later today.
The war in Gaza has claimed over 47,000 Palestinian lives, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health, and led to accusations of genocide and war crimes—charges Israel denies. The conflict has also displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza and caused a food crisis.
Separately, Trump hinted that his first foreign trip might be to Saudi Arabia, breaking the traditional practice of U.S. presidents visiting the UK first. He recalled his last visit to Saudi Arabia, citing the kingdom’s multibillion-dollar purchases of American goods, and remarked, "If the deal is right, I’ll do it again."
