Hamas is prepared to engage in talks with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, senior political bureau member Mousa Abu Marzouk told Russia’s RIA news agency on Wednesday.

“We are ready for contact and discussions with the Trump administration,” Abu Marzouk, the deputy head of Hamas’s political bureau, was quoted as saying. He added that the movement had never opposed engagement with past U.S. administrations, including those of Joe Biden and Trump, and remained open to dialogue with all international parties.

It remains unclear when the interview took place, though Abu Marzouk was in Moscow on Monday for talks at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Trump vowed Tuesday that the U.S. would take control of war-ravaged Gaza after relocating Palestinians elsewhere and developing the strip economically—an approach that would upend decades of American policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Abu Marzouk stated that talks with the U.S. had become a necessity for Hamas, given Washington's role as a key player in the Middle East. “That’s why we welcome discussions with the Americans and have no objections to them,” he told RIA.
