Public security reports confirm that a collision between two vehicles on Queen Rania Street early in the morning resulted in a pedestrian being fatally struck. Traffic investigations revealed that the drivers were racing at speeds exceeding the legal limit by more than 50 km/h.
Every night after 1:00 AM, Queen Rania Street (University Street) and King Abdullah II Street (Medical City Street) turn into terrifying high-speed race tracks. Reckless drivers weave through traffic from both sides, with no regard for the law or others' safety, all in the absence of traffic police or surveillance cameras. If nothing else, drivers should at least respect the names of these streets by obeying traffic laws.
To grasp the severity of the situation, the Public Security Director or the Traffic Department Head should attempt driving through either street after midnight in an unmarked car—with an alert driver at the wheel.
Even during the day, traffic officers stationed near the University of Jordan ignore blatant violations, particularly reckless public transport drivers who cut dangerously from left to right to pick up passengers.
Last week, I stopped and asked a traffic officer: "Don’t you see how public buses swerve recklessly across lanes?"
He replied: "Yes, it’s a violation, but we’re exhausted dealing with them. Each one has over 2,000 dinars in fines, but it makes no difference."
May God help us—another general amnesty will erase the fines, and nothing will change.
We urge the Public Security Directorate to install as many traffic cameras as possible on these two streets. The reward for doing so is in the hands of God.
