The World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Jordan, Jamila Al-Raabi, stated that 80% of recorded deaths in the country are due to chronic diseases linked to smoking.
During a meeting on Thursday between Government Communication Minister Mohammad Al-Momani and the WHO representative, Al-Momani emphasized the ministry’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Health and WHO to develop a comprehensive media plan to combat smoking.
The meeting discussed the findings of the national tobacco use survey released last month and highlighted the role of media in raising awareness about the dangers of smoking.
Al-Momani affirmed that the ministry will strengthen its media efforts to support anti-smoking initiatives and mitigate its devastating health and economic effects. A national awareness campaign will be launched to highlight the dangers of smoking and the importance of combating it in all forms.
Al-Raabi stressed the crucial role of media in raising awareness and ensuring compliance with tobacco control laws. She noted that Jordan has the necessary laws and strategies to fight smoking but requires support from various entities for effective implementation.
The WHO pledged to provide full support for Jordan’s national anti-tobacco plan.
