The Jordan Seismological Observatory has recorded 371 earthquakes between January 1 and March 16, 2025, according to its director, Ghassan Sweidan.
In a statement to Al-Mamlaka, Sweidan reported that 37 earthquakes occurred within Jordan during this period, ranging in magnitude from 1.1 to 4.2 on the Richter scale. Most were concentrated in the Gulf of Aqaba, Jordan Valley, and Wadi Araba.
Additionally, the observatory recorded 217 regional earthquakes in the Mediterranean, Turkey, and the Red Sea, along with 117 distant quakes in Iran and East Asia.
In January 2025, the observatory detected 26 local earthquakes, with magnitudes between 1.5 and 2.9, primarily in the Jordan Valley, north of the Dead Sea. That month also saw 50 regional tremors, affecting Greece, Turkey, and Iran.
The Jordan Seismological Observatory continuously monitors seismic activity in the country and surrounding regions to assess earthquake risks and potential damage. It operates 24/7, using a network of short- and long-period seismic stations and strong-motion monitoring stations installed at critical infrastructure sites to record ground acceleration data essential for earthquake-resistant engineering designs.
