On Monday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry arrived in Damascus to "affirm solidarity with Syria" in the face of the repercussions of the earthquake, according to the official Syrian News Agency.
Shoukry was received at Damascus International Airport by the Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal Al-Miqdad, and they held a bilateral discussion session.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Minister Shoukry will head to Damascus on Monday in the "first visit" by an Egyptian foreign minister since the outbreak of the crisis in Syria in 2011.
The statement added that Shoukry will visit Turkey and Syria, which were severely affected by a deadly earthquake on the sixth of February, to convey "a message of solidarity from Egypt with the two countries and their two brotherly peoples."
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi spoke to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by phone for the first time on February 7. A delegation of heads of Arab parliaments, including the speaker of the Egyptian parliament, met Assad in Damascus on Sunday.
Shoukry met his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Al-Miqdad, in 2021, on the sidelines of the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly. Cairo has sent several shipments of aid to Syria in the aftermath of the earthquake over the past few weeks.
Erdogan and Sisi met and shook hands during the recent World Cup finals that were held in Qatar.
Turkish companies pledged this month to inject new investments of $500 million into Egypt.
