U.S. President Donald Trump said he would like to see the war in Gaza come to an end, noting that he is working hard to reach another ceasefire agreement there. He also confirmed that the United States has begun direct talks with Iran.
Speaking during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office, Trump said that gaining control of Gaza and possessing it would be "a good thing." He also stated that the Houthis are producing advanced drones but stressed, “We hit them hard,” adding that the U.S. dealt firmly with the Houthis and inflicted significant damage.
Regarding negotiations with Iran, Trump announced that direct discussions between the two countries have started, and that a major meeting may be held soon. He emphasized that reaching an agreement is “the preferred outcome” and said these talks are part of efforts to avoid confrontation, adding that a successful agreement would “be in Iran’s interest.”
Trump noted that Israel wants to be a partner in these negotiations, expressing Tel Aviv’s desire to be involved in shaping the outcomes of any potential deal.
For his part, Netanyahu said that Israel is working toward a new agreement to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza. “We’re currently working on another deal that we hope will succeed. We are committed to freeing all the hostages,” he said.
Netanyahu highlighted that U.S. envoy Steven Weitekamp helped Israel conclude a previous deal that led to the release of 25 hostages from Gaza.
On the Iranian nuclear issue, Netanyahu stressed that Israel is aiming to replicate the Libyan model, where Tripoli gave up its nuclear program in exchange for international guarantees. “If we can reach a comprehensive diplomatic agreement with Tehran, that would be good,” he said.
He emphasized a united stance with Washington in opposing Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons, stating, “We are all united in not allowing Tehran to reach that threshold.” He added that Israel supports diplomatic solutions if they prove effective.
